Dear Sugar Snaps, I Love You
December 19, 2007
Tonight I made spinach and turkey meatballs for the first time. They were good, not like their juicy, beef-in-tomato sauce counterpart but tasty and easy to make extra for the freezer. My secret is adding sauteed onion to the mix, which keeps them moist and from tasting like a diet food. Whole wheat couscous and raw sugar snap peas rounded out the meal. I braced myself for another evening where my mom and I ate the meal, and the boys whined for yogurt. Or cookies.
While my kids are normally loathe to let a vegetable through their lips, over the summer when our garden was in full swing, A. would eat sugar snaps he picked with Daddy. (Not before opening them up and only eating the peas inside, not the shells. He would not eat regular peas if I served them, though.) Then we got a couple of batches of sugar snaps through our CSA, and he was excited for those, as well.
I found these bags of sugar snaps in the store and grabbed one, not sure if they’d been shuffled to his “do not eat” list since the summer. (I love the Mann’s Broccoli Cole Slaw, too, by the way.) Clearly they weren’t — he dug into them immediately. He spent 30 minutes meticulously dissecting 6 pea pods. And that was dinner. Refused the couscous even when I explained it is like pasta. Gave the meatballs the evil eye.
G. was interested in the meatballs, and may have licked one, but that was that. He proclaimed the couscous to be rice, and ate lots. Was even cajoled into eating a sugar snap when we told him how much noise he could make crunching on one.
Both boys eating the same vegetable? That’s a dinner worth repeating. Too bad the peas weren’t actually something I spent time cooking.

Kids are so funny. One day, Fae will eat couscous, and the next day, she hates it.
