Greek, All Good to Me

January 5, 2008

“Our” Greek restaurant made it into the Times this weekend!

Westchester has a decent share of good Greek restaurants these days, but Santorini is a cut above most. All the classics are done well, from a moist and subtle vegetable or meat moussaka to melt-in-your-mouth gyros, beef kebabs and chicken souvlakis (try the Santorini platter, which includes all three).

You might remember we ordered part of our Hanukkah party meal from them. I’m always happy when I see a small, locally-owned place like this get some of the attention it deserves.

If you visit, J. is partial to their Greek salad and dolmades, while I’m a fan of the moussaka and kebabs.

How does it compare to Lefteris? In the spring I went to the one in Mt. Kisco and it wasn’t as good as the one in Tarrytown, I thought. Or maybe the restaurant isn’t as good in general? At any rate, I love Greek food, so this place will go on “the list.”

I have only eaten at the Mt. Kisco Lefteris recently, and I think it is better than that one. The food tastes fresher and more flavorful to me. A lot of posters on Chowhound think there is no comparison between the two — Santorini winning out — but perhaps I don’t eat enough Greek food to see such an enormous difference. Definitely worth a try though, and much less crowded than Lefteris.

How is it that I’ve never heard of this place?? We’ll definitely try it out.

Gosh, I miss the variety of food when I lived in Westchester. What I’d do for some good Greek food! My Mom used to make the best pastitsio… I wish she would have written down her recipes! My grandma made amazing baklava. Mmmm… now I’m hungry!

Cheesy Kale Crisps: We rarely eat kale now that our farm share is over, and I want to fix that. I've wanted to try using nutritional yeast, and this recipe looks like a tasty way to do it.

"Shake It Out" by Florence + the Machine. This song reminds me of Annie Lennox, and I love tracks that include a huge, gospel-like chorus.
