Devil Dog Cake

J.’s grandma, affectionately known as GG (since she is great grandma to my boys), has a big birthday this coming Friday. Since J.’s sister is very, very pregnant, we celebrated early on Sunday with bagels and appetizing (mmmmm… lox!), and the Devil Dog cake above.

See, GG is very fond of those little snack cakes. So what better birthday treat than a cake decorated with her favorite snack? I baked a cake from a mix, and then J. did all the frosting and Devil Dog attaching. Cute, no?

In retrospect, it might have been fun to try to recreate a Devil Dog on a larger scale, like this cake, rather than using them as decoration. I’ll keep it mind for her 81st. : )

Dara, I have never heard of a Devil Dog. That bugs me you know! I don’t like to not know about snack foods…even if they are from another country. Very nice of you to make this for her:O)

Happy Birthday to GG!! Dara, that cake is adorable – and a great idea. I want one just like that when I turn 80.

Yum! That looks unhealthy and *so* very good! haha :) Congratulations on her big 80th milestone. My grandpa is 84, and my great aunt is 90! Devil Dogs … I think that I’ve had one of those before, but I can’t remember. Makes me want one now!

Cheesy Kale Crisps: We rarely eat kale now that our farm share is over, and I want to fix that. I've wanted to try using nutritional yeast, and this recipe looks like a tasty way to do it.

"Shake It Out" by Florence + the Machine. This song reminds me of Annie Lennox, and I love tracks that include a huge, gospel-like chorus.
