Photo Tour of My Passover Kitchen

April 19, 2008

Come take a peek inside my kitchen, now that it is fully turned over for Passover:

My fridge was a major pain to clean. We bought it last year when our twenty-year old fridge failed, so this is the first time I’ve deep-cleaned the new one. You’d think a modern appliance would be easier to clean than something old, but the drawers have so many crevices I felt like I was just pushing crumbs around from one spot to another. Plus I had to contort myself to clean the bottom of the pull-out lower freezer. Still, it’s done and now you could eat off the inside of my fridge if you’d like (or my oven, for that matter). I’ve wrapped a section of the door with a disposable tablecloth — chometz is lurking behind there, so don’t touch until Passover is over! You can see my two big containers of Inca Red quinoa, ready for tonight’s seder, on the right side of the fridge.

Next is my pantry, a tiny little thing. A. is fond of telling anyone who will listen that we bought special pasta you can eat on Passover (it’s made of potato starch, and is a far cry from real, wheat-based noodles). Again, the bottom two shelves contain chometz that we did not use up or throw out (unopened cans of beans, an almost-new bottle of canola oil, etc.) so they are covered up and will not be touched during the holiday.

My only two Pesadich pots! I buy disposable aluminum baking dishes for anything that’s going in the oven.

I used to use a set of these dishes, which I believe were from my paternal grandma. They’re Anchor Hocking Fire King, which apparently is now a collectible range. Who knew? The “mugs” are avocado green at it’s best (worst?).

This year I’m using the new plastic plates, cups, and bowls I bought at Target, and a small set of plain white Corelle dishes and bowls. I keep them out on my counter (since the dishes in my cupboard are not used during the holiday). Also covered up on the counter, and not for Passover use, is my toaster oven and all my cookbooks. I made an executive decision to continue using the boys’ Klean Kanteens during the holiday, since they only hold water.

That’s it! Happy Passover!

Thanks for sharing! I found your tour very interesting. I don’t know a whole lot about Passover, so I really love learning more about it.

Cheesy Kale Crisps: We rarely eat kale now that our farm share is over, and I want to fix that. I've wanted to try using nutritional yeast, and this recipe looks like a tasty way to do it.

"Shake It Out" by Florence + the Machine. This song reminds me of Annie Lennox, and I love tracks that include a huge, gospel-like chorus.
