CSA Share, Week 1

June 4, 2008

Our 2008 share through Roxbury Farm began today! This is our second year buying a share, and I feel much better prepared for the influx of vegetables. Though, the pick up was sparse this week due to an unusually cold, dry spring (the farm is in Kinderhook, NY): just a hefty bunch of broccoli rabe, a head of red-leaf lettuce, and a bowl of Asian braising greens (tatsoi? I’m not sure what else).

I’m thinking I may chop the greens into tomorrow’s stuffed cabbage, use the lettuce for salads, and then do a cold side dish with the broccoli rabe for Saturday’s barbecue (a pasta salad?). It will be easy to get through this week’s share, something I’m sure I’ll be wistful about come mid-July.

The lettuce looks especially appealing to me. Fresh salads are the best.

Want to Try

Back Bay Cookies: I was cleaning out my pantry this week and found a bag of roasted, peeled chestnuts. I'm going to sub chocolate chips for the golden raisins and make these for the boys.

Cook to This

"Breakeven" by The Script. Such a sad story in a beautiful song. I have been singing this around the house so much that G. recognizes it and tells me to stop singing "THAT!" song again.
