CSA Share, Week 2
June 11, 2008

This is more like it! A nice head of arrowhead cabbage, a bunch of turnips, a bunch of radishes, and a bowl each of braising greens, spinach, and lettuce.
My mom suggested using last week’s lettuce as a wrap for tuna salad — that’s what we ate for dinner last night and between the two of us we almost finished off the head! So I may do that again this week, because it was delicious. Really, the stuff from the supermarket tastes nothing like this farm-fresh lettuce — it is earthy but delicate, tender yet strong enough to hold a dollop of tuna.
I’ll mix the rest of the lettuce with the spinach for a salad, maybe, with radishes sliced in. I like to roast turnips. And I will probably chop the braising greens into the meatballs I’m making tomorrow night.
Last year I made Cabbage Salad with Lime and Cumin (scroll down to the middle of the page) with our arrowhead cabbage, and it was just OK. I may try stir-frying it this time. Or perhaps I’ll make an Asian slaw to go along with our Father’s Day barbecue?
Let me know if you have any other preparation ideas.

Wrapping lettuce around stuff that you would put in a sandwich is a great idea! You could do that with egg salad too….I might try that!

I love lettuce wraps. My favorite way is to make a curried chicken salad with it.
Everything sounds so good.

We mixed the turnip greens, the spinach, and some leftover house smoked sausage from Q in Port Chester to make our usual “green spaghetti” thing, which both I and the boy love. The turnip greens were surprisingly mild after they were blanched, so don’t forget to use them!
Um, yeah. About those turnip greens… As I was trying to cram everything into my fridge last night, I ripped the greens off the turnips, chucked them in the garbage, and then thought “I bet I’m supposed to use these, too.” You are supposed to remind me of these important things earlier! ; ) — Dara
