Mashed Turnips
June 16, 2008

I had a cute bunch of six young turnips (each barely larger than a radish) from my farm share this week. Tonight I trimmed and washed them, cut them into quarters, and then boiled them in salted water for about 8 minutes.
Once they were drained and mashed with a fork, I put them back into the empty pot and turned the heat up to high — a lot of water was released during the mashing and I wanted it to evaporate before I went any further. A pat of butter, some ground black pepper, and a minced green onion went into the pot as well, and I cooked my tiny portion of turnips until the butter melted.
The turnips were sweet and mild, tasting more like cauliflower than potatoes. And of course a little butter never hurt the flavor of anything.
A photography note: I try to take my photos outdoors, because the light is better. It started raining right as I began snapping pictures of the mashed turnips. See the raindrops on my plate? It’s still a better photo than I could have gotten in my low-light house!

I hadn’t really realized your photos were taken outside, but the mashed turnips look kind of good…i always think i don’t really like them…but these look so light in colour and tasty.

I got turnips at my farm share this week, too. However I traded them to Mae for radishes for my salad. I think she is going to do this recipe b/c it looks great.
