CSA Share, Week 14

September 3, 2008

It’s important to me that my boys participate in our farm share. I want them to know the names of all the vegetables we receive (especially since they often don’t eat them), and we talk about why the garlic is very dirty, or why we get so much of one thing (corn) but not a lot of another (eggplant). At our pick-up site we bag our own share from large bins, and I let the boys pick out the vegetables. This is tough for me, since I can ask them to choose the largest eggplant or fill a bowl all the way (but not too much!) with salad greens, but they just don’t have the same ideas as me as to what is the best selection. I guide them, but don’t undo what they’ve selected.

This week that meant that one of my peppers was half-rotten (I didn’t notice when G. dropped it in the bag), and I got the tiniest eggplants in the bin. It’s all good. Right? I’m still trying to convince myself.

Our share included: 6 ears of corn, lettuce mix, swiss chard, 2 bulbs of garlic, 2 heads of broccoli (yay!), 3 (Japanese?) eggplant, Juliet tomatoes, Golden Rave tomatoes, a quart of potatoes, a handful of parsley, and 4 sweet peppers (Carmen again, I think).

The other day A. mentioned he likes broccoli in cheese sauce, so I will make that this week at some point. Corn will be a side for dinner tomorrow, along with a rolled turkey breast stuffed with sauteed swiss chard and garlic. I’ll make a red and yellow tomato salad for that meal, too. I still have last week’s eggplant in the fridge, so I’ll combine it with the three babies I received today and finally made those vegan meatballs I’ve been intending to try out. Mashed potatoes, maybe. The peppers I’ll serve raw or in salad. And maybe early next week I’ll get around to oven-drying some tomatoes as well.

I’m curious about the vegan meatballs. Our priest’s wife made albondigas soup with a nut based meatball, and they were really good.

I’ve seen recipes with nuts, but I’m going to try one with mushrooms, eggplant, and breadcrumbs. When I finally make them I’ll post a recipe! — Dara

“A. mentioned he likes broccoli in cheese sauce.” What??? You’re saying that this child who’s so picky actually asked for this? Amazing!

I’ve served it with boxed mac n’ cheese, so he mixes the cheese sauce from that in with the broccoli. It was more like an observation that he’d tolerate it. ; ) — Dara

I like how you lined up all the veges this week, each on it’s own tile:O)

I knew what you meant! You might like the order of my veggies, but you would, of course, be appalled by the boys’ pajama pile. — Dara

    Yes, Carmen.

That is a funny picture – all the vegetables in the boxes. We got one big eggplant this week; I made a sort of ratatouille…

P.S. I’m sure I got the link through Bonnie to your blog, but wanted to tell you I’ve enjoyed seeing your weekly CSA shares and what you are doing with the veggies.
We live in Alaska and have actually participated in a local Organic CSA here as well. It’s like Christmas every week we pick up our veggies. It only runs 12 weeks though, which is probably an eternity to the farmers, but so short for me!
