Setting the Mood for Onions
September 16th, 2008

I didn’t remember to put my onion in the freezer 20 minutes before it was needed, so I decided to try out the candle idea to keep me tear-free as I chopped. It didn’t work for me — this was a plain old supermarket onion and I still had to leave the room in the middle of that minor knife work. It wasn’t a total loss, though — it did amuse me to have such a romantic setting for my dinner prep!

Are your knives super sharp…I am sure they are…but that would help reduce the mist coming off of the onion as you chop…is that what it is, onion mist??
They are super-duper sharp, J. just sharpened them for me. I wonder if my technique just sucks, though. — Dara

I run my onions under cold water after I make the initial halving slice and that seems to help while I finish the chopping.
That’s a great, easy idea — I’m going to try it next time! Thanks. — Dara
