CSA Share, Week 16

September 18, 2008

I’m having a mixed-up week. We were sitting at dinner Wednesday night when all of a sudden I realized it was not Thursday, it was Wednesday and that meant I had to go pick up my farm share. I almost missed it altogether this week, and I would have been more than kicking myself if I had.

We received 3 ears of corn, 3 Carmen peppers, and nice-sized bunch of beets with beautiful greens still attached, a little basil, lettuce mix, a smallish eggplant, a bag of carrots, a pint of Ping Pong tomatoes, 6 large plum tomatoes, and a quart of slicing tomatoes.

I also got an extra set of beet greens from another member who didn’t want them (even though I provided cooking tips!). I twisted the stalks in my hands to detach the greens from the beets and was splattered with blood-red dots of beet juice in the process. It was that kind of day.

I have no big plans for this week’s haul, other than trying Fluffy Carrot Muffins (without the frosting, though). Last year I found the carrots to be kind of bitter; hopefully that’s not the case this time around.

Are you loving those Carmen peppers? I think they’re great.

I adore them, they’re much better than red bell peppers. — Dara

Want to Try

Sweet Potato and Gruyère Turnovers: These easy pockets (using pre-made, refrigerated dough) sound delicious to me, and even include swiss chard -- something I always seem to have in my fridge from our CSA.

Cook to This

"Kids" by MGMT. Truly bizarre video, but a song that always perks my ears up when I hear it on the radio. They're a 21st century update of synth-pop bands I loved in the late 80s/early 90s (hello, New Order).
