CSA Share ‘09, Week 6

I am late posting about our share this week, because J. and I went down to Atlantic City for a couple of nights for a quick getaway — the boys stayed home with both sets of grandparents taking great care of them.

My parents were kind enough to pick up our share on Wednesday evening. This week we received: a small arrowhead cabbage, 4 ears of corn, 3 yellow squash, some swiss chard, mixed lettuce, a bunch of truncated carrots (I can’t figure out why they’re almost all broken off at the tip — it looks like it’s for a reason), onions, a bulb of garlic, basil, and cilantro.

J. grilled the corn, squash, and some sliced onions for lunch today and they were all delicious. The onions were so sweet and mild they actually tasted like onion rings. One reason I think J. is such a good cook is he has the patience to wait for a pay off, whereas I am often all about getting it done. So when he grills vegetables, he leaves them on the grill until they are just meltingly caramelized — the extra time over the flame makes all the difference.

I’m planning on pan frying the swiss chard with some gnocchi tomorrow night, and I will probably whip up another batch of pesto with the basil, trying walnuts this time instead of the more expensive pine nuts.

I’ve been loving the farmers market vegetables so much that I’m thinking about getting a CSA share. However, my biggest fear is getting stuck with things I cannot use or things I don’t know how to use.

I know myself well enough to know those things are just going to rot in my fridge.

My next jaunt to the farmers market is going to be to get pickle makings. Mom and I were talking about pickling some of the tomatoes we’ve got in the yard.

Want to Try

Back Bay Cookies: I was cleaning out my pantry this week and found a bag of roasted, peeled chestnuts. I'm going to sub chocolate chips for the golden raisins and make these for the boys.

Cook to This

"Breakeven" by The Script. Such a sad story in a beautiful song. I have been singing this around the house so much that G. recognizes it and tells me to stop singing "THAT!" song again.
