CSA Share ‘09, Week 19

It was an idyllic farm share pick up this week — the timing of our busy day had us already in the car when it was time to get the vegetables, and the boys were terrific helpers. They were calm and took turns taking the appropriate quantity from each bin, and were even careful about placing the veggies in our bag. I wish every week was as pleasant!

We received lettuce mix, a large acorn squash, arugula, a quart of potatoes, 3 Carmen peppers, an onion, and a bunch of broccoli rabe. The board also said to choose either 3 bulbs of garlic or a container of green tomatoes — even though there were only 2 bulbs of garlic left I gladly took that option.

D, I’m challenged as you know…so a few quick white bean/kale soup questions…what colour is a sweet onion? i only know about red, white and yellow…also, what if my grocery store just has kale and not a specific kind…I think I usually see green or white…and tomatoes…man, I only see various mini ones, field tomatoes and then on the vine/roma ones…and I don’t think we have Spike but I will check…see, I’m having recipe panic!:)

It’s a yellow onion. Sweet differentiates between something like a Vidalia onion here (from Georgia) and something like a Spanish onion which is more sharp. Any onion is fine, really. Any kind of kale is fine — this time I threw in collard greens, too, because I had them. Or use spinach. Tomatoes, you can buy a can of diced tomatoes if you’d like! This time of year that is probably your best bet. And forget about Spike, it’s just an all-purpose seasoning. Salt and pepper are sufficient, or if you have something like Mrs. Dash or similar you’re golden! — Dara

Sweet Potato and Gruyère Turnovers: These easy pockets (using pre-made, refrigerated dough) sound delicious to me, and even include swiss chard -- something I always seem to have in my fridge from our CSA.

Cook to This

"Kids" by MGMT. Truly bizarre video, but a song that always perks my ears up when I hear it on the radio. They're a 21st century update of synth-pop bands I loved in the late 80s/early 90s (hello, New Order).
