CSA Share ‘09, Week 21

I recently took everything out of my trunk to give my car a thorough cleaning, and I haven’t moved everything back in yet. That includes the stash of grocery bags and my huge blue Ikea bag that I normally keep at the ready. Of course, I realized this only as I flung open the trunk to grab bags for today’s farm share pick up. I had a single grocery tote with me, so I took what I could, leaving behind the lettuce mix and arugula that were also part of this week’s share. I didn’t feel like picking all the loose leaves apart from the rest of the veggies in the bag, and figured they’d wind up crushed anyway.

What I did grab looked great: a bunch of Toscano (dinosaur) kale, a butternut squash, a quart of potatoes, an onion, and a large cabbage.

I passed another member loading up her car as I returned to mine, and noticed she was shoving what looked like several extra plastic produce bags back in her trunk. Thinking I might be able use one to take the arugula and lettuce after all, I said, “Oh! Are those extra bags?” And she said, “No. I need them.” I must have looked surprised by her answer, because she quickly reversed her decision. Whatever, I’d gotten to my car already and wanted to get the boys home. I couldn’t help but think of Jami Gertz’s character telling Elaine on Seinfeld, “Sorry. I haven’t a square to spare.”

Want to Try

Back Bay Cookies: I was cleaning out my pantry this week and found a bag of roasted, peeled chestnuts. I'm going to sub chocolate chips for the golden raisins and make these for the boys.

Cook to This

"Breakeven" by The Script. Such a sad story in a beautiful song. I have been singing this around the house so much that G. recognizes it and tells me to stop singing "THAT!" song again.
