CSA 2010, Week 25 (Final Pickup)
December 8, 2010

I skipped our penultimate pickup last week, so I was eager to get this week’s share — the last for the 2010 season.
We received a rutabaga, a bag of carrots, 2 onions, a quart of beets, a quart of potatoes, and 6 ears of popping corn.
I have never seen a rutabaga before today. I might have been able to guess at what it was, but it’s a first for me and I will have to figure out how to cook it. Without Googling first, I’m going to guess it’s a roast or mash proposition. I’m going to make Bunny Muffins with the carrots. I didn’t have good luck with the popcorn last year. We received directions that you could pop the corn on the cob, if you put it in a paper bag and cooked it in the microwave. The smell was horrible! Corn cobs burning is not an smell I’d wish on anyone. This year, I’ll try the paper bag trick again, but with the kernels off the cob.
I waffled throughout this season on doing a share with the same farm again. When I joined this CSA in 2007, there were far fewer convenient options. Now, there are many alternatives (some organic, some not; some featuring local produce, some not). But as our share dwindled these past few weeks I found myself already missing it, and looking forward to June when it would start back up again. Tonight I wrote out a check for our 2011 share, which will be my 5th year with Roxbury Farm. Being a member of a CSA truly is a partnership, with the farmers forgiving some of missteps of the members (people taking more than they’re allotted) and the members being understanding when the weather doesn’t cooperate and the yield or quality is not what we’d hoped. So it’s settled, I’m in for 2011. Now I just need to figure out what to do with this rutabaga.

I am so irritated with my husband, who “forgot” the pickup yesterday AND last week.

I also did not have luck with those popping corn which look super cute. I remember your bunny muffins! I miss them!

I think your sense of adventure is wonderful! I love the way you plan meals around what you picked up rather than having a list and going to the market to get only what you need for your plan. Let us know what you did with the rutabaga.
