Roxbury Farm CSA 2011, Week 5 (+ Beef Share, Week 1)
July 13, 2011

This week we received a bunch of carrots (tops went to the goats), 2 zucchini, 1 bunch of onions, 2 cucumbers, a large head of romaine lettuce, 4 pieces of summer squash, 1 small arrowhead cabbage, 1 large head of broccoli, a small bowl of salad mix, and small handfuls of parsley and cilantro. I love the smell of cilantro!
This also marked the first delivery of our beef share, which we purchased for the first time this year. The cows are humanely raised at Roxbury Farm, alongside our vegetables, and we paid $115 upfront for a share:
Beef Share: 4 packages of ground beef, 2 packages of steak (Porterhouse, Rib, OR T-bone), 2 roasts, 1 package of stew meant or soup bone, and 1 other beef item (flank or skirt steak, short ribs, etc.). This about 18 to 20 lbs of beef.
We’ll get small deliveries of our beef share every few weeks. That price works out to about $6 per pound, which I felt was acceptable for locally-raised, grass-fed beef from a farm we know. This week, we got a package of ground beef and a nice-sized flank steak. Unfortunately, the packages aren’t labeled with their weights, so I’ll have to figure that out before I defrost and cook them. I’m curious to see how the flavor and texture are once we get them on the grill.
Are you able to get other farm-grown products through your CSA? I would love to get eggs through mine.
